From Halaqah to Business: The Transformation of Islamic Boarding School Education Towards the Economic Independence of Students at the Abu Zairi Salafiyah Islamic Boarding Schoolnts at the Abu Zairi Salafiyah Islamic Boarding School

Abstract

Salafi Islamic boarding schools have been known as institutions that emphasize the teaching of the yellow book and the formation of religious character. However, the demands of socio-economic change encourage pesantren to develop the economic independence of students without abandoning Islamic values that are the main foundation of education. The research uses a qualitative approach with a field study design. Data was collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with caregivers, ustadz, students, and alumni, and documentation of pesantren business activities. Data analysis was carried out, data presentation, and conclusions were drawn with triangulation techniques of sources and methods to maintain the validity of the findings. The results of the study show that halakah functions as the foundation for the formation of the economic character of students, especially in the values of honesty, trust, discipline, responsibility, and Islamic business ethics. The pesantren business unit acts as an experiential-based learning laboratory that strengthens the internalization of values. The direct involvement of students in business management has been proven to increase motivation and economic independence, managerial systems, product innovation, and adaptability to digital technology. The role of caregivers as role models and mentors is a key factor in the success of value transfer from the halakah space to entrepreneurial practices. This study concludes that the integration of halakah and business activities is an effective and contextual character education model for salafiyah Islamic boarding schools. This transformation does not shift the function of pesantren as a scientific and spiritual institution, but rather strengthens its relevance in facing modern economic challenges.
