About the Journal

Islamic Studies of the Global South (ISGS) is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal that serves as a leading forum for the publication of rigorous, innovative, and interdisciplinary scholarship on Islam in the diverse contexts of the Global South. The journal is committed to advancing scholarly conversations that illuminate how Islamic beliefs, institutions, traditions, and intellectual legacies interact with the rapidly evolving social, political, economic, legal, educational, cultural, technological, and environmental realities of contemporary societies.

Rather than treating the Global South merely as a geographical designation, ISGS approaches it as an intellectual framework for understanding the plurality of Muslim experiences, knowledge systems, and historical trajectories across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and other interconnected regions. The journal recognizes that these societies have generated rich traditions of Islamic thought and continue to make significant contributions to contemporary global scholarship through locally grounded yet globally relevant perspectives.

ISGS is founded on the conviction that the future of Islamic Studies requires greater epistemic diversity and a more balanced global academic landscape. The journal therefore seeks to amplify scholarly voices that challenge intellectual asymmetries, foster critical dialogue, and contribute to the decolonization of knowledge by engaging seriously with indigenous traditions, local contexts, transnational exchanges, and emerging forms of Muslim intellectual production. At the same time, ISGS encourages constructive engagement between classical Islamic scholarship and contemporary theoretical developments across the humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary research.

The journal welcomes original research articles, review essays, conceptual papers, and comparative studies employing qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, digital humanities, or interdisciplinary approaches. All submissions are expected to demonstrate originality, methodological rigor, theoretical significance, and meaningful contributions to current academic debates in Islamic Studies and related disciplines.

Particular attention is given to research addressing contemporary challenges and opportunities facing Muslim societies, including but not limited to artificial intelligence and digital ethics, religious authority in the digital age, Islamic economics and financial innovation, governance and public policy, education, environmental sustainability, migration, gender and family studies, social justice, peacebuilding, interreligious engagement, cultural transformation, and the evolving role of Islam in an increasingly interconnected world.

As an international scholarly platform, ISGS aspires to bridge regional perspectives with global academic discourse by fostering collaboration among researchers, academics, policymakers, and practitioners from diverse disciplinary and geographical backgrounds. The journal is especially committed to supporting emerging scholarship from underrepresented regions while maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity, peer review, and publication ethics.

Through its commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and intellectual innovation, Islamic Studies of the Global South (ISGS) seeks to become a globally recognized reference for cutting-edge research that not only advances Islamic Studies but also contributes to broader conversations on knowledge production, social transformation, and the future of the Global South.
